Asset classes were mixed in January, with crypto and equities (except Emerging Markets) posting slight gains.
The US Federal Reserve (Fed) kept its key interest rate target range unchanged between 5.25% and 5.5% at its latest meeting on 31 Jan. Market participants were focused mostly on Fed Chairman Powell’s comments about the timing of potential future interest rate cuts. He highlighted that the Fed is looking for a sustainable downward path for price increases in order to feel certain that inflation will remain sustainably below its 2% target. Powell also said that cuts at the central bank’s next meeting in March are unlikely.
US inflation has been falling, but is still above the Fed’s 2% target. The Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, which excludes volatile food and energy prices and is a closely watched inflation gauge in the US economy, was up 2.9% YoY in December.
Key macro events coming up in Feb include new US inflation data, FOMC minutes, and the ECB’s next interest rate decision.
