What is Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC)?
Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is an Ethereum token designed to represent bitcoin (BTC) one-to-one. In plain terms, WBTC lets bitcoin’s value move into Ethereum apps that use smart contracts.
That is the core difference from native BTC: WBTC is built for Ethereum compatibility.
Why does WBTC exist?
Bitcoin wasn’t originally designed to work with Ethereum smart contracts or decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. WBTC was created as an Ethereum-compatible token so bitcoin value could be used in DeFi apps.
Common DeFi uses for WBTC include lending, borrowing and trading on Ethereum-based platforms.
How to buy Wrapped Bitcoin in the US
One option is to buy Wrapped Bitcoin in the Crypto.com App. Basic flow:
- Create an account and complete identity verification.
- Add funds with a bank transfer, credit/debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto transfer.
- Tap ‘Buy’, search for Wrapped Bitcoin and enter the amount.
- Review the order details and confirm when you’re ready.
For One-Time orders in the App, the conversion rate is valid for 15 seconds. If you don’t confirm within that time, the rate refreshes.
What payment methods and minimums apply when buying Wrapped Bitcoin?
You don’t need to buy a whole WBTC. In the US, Wrapped Bitcoin can be bought in fractional amounts from US$1.
US dollars (USD) deposited via Local Bank Transfer can be used to buy Wrapped Bitcoin without foreign exchange fees. Other transaction fees and spread may apply.
Payment options and One-Time order limits can vary by jurisdiction and account status, so check the details shown in the App before confirming.
