The technology behind 0x combines two key strategies:
* **Off-chain order relay:** Transactions are managed off the main Ethereum blockchain, reducing costs and increasing speed.
* **On-chain settlement:** The final settlement of a trade is executed on the Ethereum blockchain, ensuring security and finality.
The native token of the protocol is **ZRX**, which is used for both governance and payments within the network.
0x was co-founded by Will Warren and Amir Bandeali in late 2016. The project was officially launched after a successful Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in 2017, which raised $24 million from prominent investment firms such as Polychain Capital, Pantera Capital, and FBG Capital.
The ZRX token has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. Half of the supply was sold during the 2017 ICO, with the rest reserved for the founding team, core development, and early backers. The protocol has also developed additional services, including the **0x Instant** tool for simple crypto purchasing and the **0x Launch Kit** for easily creating a decentralized exchange or marketplace.
0x is a permissionless protocol that facilitates the trading of Ethereum-based tokens (including ERC-20 and ERC-721) using "relayers." Relayers are responsible for managing off-chain order books. They use the 0x protocol to build a DEX and find the best possible price for each trade by aggregating liquidity from various sources. While they do not take custody of the assets, they are compensated for their services.
The 0x protocol's sophisticated API scans all available DEXs (both on-chain and off-chain) to provide users with the best prices and a seamless trading experience. In version 3 of the protocol, a staking mechanism was introduced that allows market makers to participate in governance and earn ETH rewards for providing liquidity. ZRX holders can also earn rewards by delegating their tokens to these market-making pools. The network also offers the **0x Launch Kit**, an over-the-counter (OTC) service that facilitates peer-to-peer exchanges with a direct connection between both parties.
The ZRX token has two primary functions:
* **Governance:** ZRX holders can vote on governance proposals, giving them a direct say in how the protocol should be developed and managed over time. Their voting power is proportional to their holdings.
* **Payments:** The ZRX token is used to pay trading fees to relayers for their book-making services.
The 0x network can be used to trade both fungible (e.g., ERC-20) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which can represent various assets from digital art to real estate.
