Altcoins to watch in September 2026

What’s putting Zcash, Hyperliquid, Bittensor, Uniswap, and Circle on the radar this month? ETF developments, regulatory wins, a record token burn, and a major new launch.

Guide to altcoins

Key Takeaways

  • Zcash shot to an eight-year high above $860 after Grayscale filed to convert its trust into a spot ETF (ZCSH).
  • Hyperliquid hit a fresh all-time high after US president Donald Trump’s public remarks.
  • Uniswap burned a record 150,000 UNI tokens in late August through its fee switch, with annualized burn now exceeding 16 million tokens.
  • Circle's Arc, a new Layer-1 blockchain for institutional stablecoin settlement, will be launching its public mainnet.
  • Bittensor is defending its $200 support ahead of an SEC decision on Grayscale and Bitwise's spot TAO ETF applications.

By the numbers, there shouldn’t be a clear motivation to watch altcoins heading into September. Bitcoin dominance just broke out above 60% and the Altcoin Season Index sits well short of the 75 reading that would actually earn the label ‘altcoin season’.

Yet, a handful of names are having some of their best months in a long while. The massive one-week market rally may not have lifted every single altcoin, but discerning traders may notice that it’s the small, specific catalysts — an ETF here, a presidential shoutout there — doing the work.

1. Zcash (ZEC)

ZEC shot up more than 40% in a single session after Grayscale filed to convert its Zcash Trust into a spot ETF (ZCSH), listed on NYSE Arca, trading since August 25.

The fund can hold up to 393,000 ZEC, north of $260 million at current prices. That filing alone was enough to send the token to an eight-year high above $860 and push its market cap past $13 billion, making it the 12th-largest crypto asset at the time of writing.

Privacy coins have been unfashionable for years, but Multicoin Capital's opinion on Zcash, that it’s the “cleanest way” to justify the thesis of truly private, censorship and seizure-resistant assets having clear product-market fit, looks prescient in hindsight. What’s worth flagging: the rally has been driven by leverage more than by spot buying; this kind of gap tends to produce sharp, fast pullbacks once the leveraged crowd starts taking profit.

2. Hyperliquid (HYPE)

Most altcoins don't get a shoutout from a sitting US president. At a White House gathering of crypto executives on August 19, Trump said CFTC Chair Michael Selig "is also working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States in a fully compliant and legal fashion, working very hard on that."

It’s seen as a significant breakthrough as Hyperliquid's on-chain perpetual futures currently lock US users out entirely; a legal pathway would open the platform to the largest derivatives market on earth.

HYPE jumped 21% within hours of the comments. HYPE proceeded to hit a fresh all-time high near $83 on August 25, up 34% for the week, helped along by the launch of Elysium, a new Layer-2 network that routes half its sequencer fees into HYPE buybacks.

The one thing worth watching is the RSI, which suggested that HYPE is already in overbought territory, even if the underlying story remains strong.

3. Uniswap (UNI)

For years, Uniswap protocol processed enormous volume, but none of that value ever reached UNI holders directly.

That's finally changing. On August 21, Uniswap's fee switch burned roughly 150,000 UNI — about $590,000 — its biggest single-day burn yet, beating records set in both June and July. Over a year, the market may be looking at more than 16 million UNI removed from supply annually.

Some of that fee revenue is coming from a place few people would have predicted a year ago: Uniswap has now processed over $1 billion in tokenised stock volume on Robinhood Chain, according to founder Hayden Adams, meaning UNI's fortunes are increasingly tied to real-world asset trading instead of just crypto swaps.

Early numbers from the v4 fee mechanism suggested roughly $325,000 a day in fees, which would annualise to about $119 million if it holds up. It’s a big "if"; a few weeks of strong numbers don’t translate to a durable trend and it's worth watching whether that pace survives into Q4.

4. Circle's Arc Network

You can't buy this one yet, but it might be one of the biggest institutional blockchain story of the month.

Circle — the company behind USDC — is launching the public mainnet of Arc, a Layer-1 chain built specifically for stablecoin settlement, on September 16.

The validator list includes household names like BlackRock, DTCC, Intercontinental Exchange (which owns the NYSE), Mastercard, Visa, Standard Chartered, Galaxy, MoneyGram, Fireblocks and Sumitomo Corporation, all running validator infrastructure.

The catch is that ARC, the network's native token, isn't tradeable by the public. Circle raised $222 million for it back in May — a16z led the round, with BlackRock, Apollo, and ICE also participating — at a $3 billion fully diluted valuation, but those tokens sit with accredited investors under a lock-up that only starts once Arc moves to proof-of-stake after launch.

Circle hasn't said when, or if, a public token sale follows. The testnet has already handled more than 244 million transactions since October, with more than 100 organizations already kicking the tires.

5. Bittensor (TAO)

Grayscale and Bitwise have both filed for spot TAO ETFs, with an SEC decision still hanging in the balance. Grayscale, in the meantime, has made TAO the largest single position in its broader AI-focused fund behind the scenes.

The network itself hasn't been sitting still while it waits. A cross-chain integration with a major Ethereum Layer-2 network went live in late August, making TAO easier to move into DeFi outside its home ecosystem. The news helped the token hold its closely watched $200 support level; Bittensor had a rough stretch earlier this year, when Covenant AI's abrupt exit from three major subnets triggered a 38% single-day drop.

Interestingly, roughly 70% of TAO's supply stayed staked through that entire episode, as long-term holders held on.
