It has evolved from a simple exchange utility token to a key component of a broad ecosystem that powers decentralized applications (dApps), smart contracts, and various financial services.
BNB was launched in July 2017 as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum network during the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) for the Binance exchange. In 2019, it migrated to Binance Chain as its native token. The development of BNB Smart Chain (BSC) in 2020 further expanded BNB's utility, making it the base token for a parallel smart contract-enabled blockchain. In 2022, the Binance Chain and Binance Smart Chain were merged to create the unified **BNB Chain**.
BNB was created with an initial total supply of 200 million tokens. To create scarcity and potentially increase its value over time, Binance conducts regular "token burns" by using a portion of its revenues to buy back and permanently destroy BNB tokens. Recently, this process has transitioned to an "auto-burn" mechanism.
Within the BNB Chain ecosystem, BNB is used to pay for transaction fees and to participate in the network's consensus mechanism. The BNB Smart Chain uses a **Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA)** consensus mechanism, which is a hybrid of Proof of Stake and Proof of Authority. This system relies on a limited number of validators who are chosen by BNB stakers to validate transactions and secure the network.
BNB has several uses within the Binance ecosystem and beyond:
* **Payment for Transaction Fees:** It is used to pay transaction fees on the Binance exchange and on the BNB Chain, often at a discounted rate.
* **Gas on BNB Smart Chain:** Similar to how ETH powers the Ethereum network, BNB is the "gas" token for smart contracts and other transactions on BNB Smart Chain.
* **Decentralized Finance (DeFi):** BNB is a key component of the vast DeFi ecosystem on BNB Smart Chain, used for activities like staking, yield farming, and providing liquidity on decentralized exchanges (DEXs).
* **Governance:** Holding and staking BNB allows users to participate in the governance of the BNB Chain, giving them a voice in decisions about the network's future.
* **Other Use Cases:** BNB can be used for things like participating in token sales on Binance Launchpad, and a growing number of merchants and services accept it for payments.
