1.1 Macro of the G20 Economies
Monetary Policy
Monetary policy across the G20 turned cautious and diverged significantly, reflecting complex domestic inflation dynamics and persistent geopolitical friction. Central banks are navigating a delicate balance between stabilizing inflation and preventing economic stagnation.
- U.S. and EU: The European Central Bank (ECB) and the U.S. Federal Reserve maintained a watchful posture in September. Persistent wage growth and a renewed surge in energy costs drove sticky underlying inflation, tempering market expectations for aggressive rate cuts. Meanwhile, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) faced increasing international and domestic pressure to continue normalizing interest rates, contrasting with the easier stances elsewhere.
- Emerging Markets: Policy paths split based on commodity exposure and domestic price pressures. High-inflation economies, such as Türkiye, maintained elevated policy rates to anchor expectations, while export-dependent Asian economies held rates steady to safeguard capital flows and manage currency stability.
Outlook
- Energy Shock Persistence: Renewed geopolitical volatility in the Middle East poses supply chain risks. While strategic reserve drawdowns and non-Gulf supply adjustments cushioned initial impacts, prolonged price pressures could erode household purchasing power.
- Elevated Long-Term Sovereign Yields: Government borrowing costs, particularly 30-year bond yields, remain at multi-decade highs. This strains fiscal budgets and increases capital costs for private investment.
- Valuation Risks in Tech and AI: The continuous surge in AI infrastructure spending sets high expectations for future corporate earnings. Shortfalls in returns could prompt market asset repricings.
1.2 Crypto Market
Decentralized finance (DeFi) categories all increased in September. AI (+86.4%) led market cap growth, while the Decentralized Exchange (DEX) category captured the highest market attention (Volume/Mcap ratio).
Near Protocol (NEAR) was the primary driver of market cap growth in the AI sector. The surge followed Bitwise’s launch of the first U.S. spot NEAR ETF on NYSE Arca under the ticker NRR.
Raydium served as the main catalyst for DEX market attention, driven by its role as an active venue for tokenized stock trading on Solana. The protocol processed $2.3 billion in tokenized stock trading volume during Q3, a 40% quarter-over-quarter increase.
U.S. spot BTC ETFs recorded net inflows of $2.65 billion in September, compared to $3.5 billion in net inflows the month prior.
Meanwhile, U.S. spot ETH ETFs recorded net inflows of $832 million, down from $1.8 billion in net inflows in August.

1.4 Equity Market
U.S.
The U.S. stock market experienced notable divergence and heightened volatility. Consistent with historical seasonality as typically the weakest month of the year, broad market averages came under pressure. Mega-cap technology and communication-services stocks held up relatively well, driven by continued AI capital expenditure, which insulating cap-weighted large-cap benchmarks. However, elevated broad-market weakness persisted across individual equities, small-caps, and value-oriented sectors due to a sharp surge in Treasury yields and persistent macroeconomic headwinds.
S&P 500 | -0.5% |
Nasdaq Composite | +1.9% |
Dow Jones Industrial Average | -4.3% |
Key Driving Factors
- AI and Semiconductor Leadership: Continued optimism around AI infrastructure spending, hyperscaler capex, and chip demand supported mega-cap technology and communication-services shares.
- Higher Rates and Treasury Yields: The Federal Reserve’s 25-basis-point rate hike to 3.75%–4.00%, together with the 10-year Treasury yield rising to around 5.29%, increased discount-rate pressure on equities.
- Oil and Inflation Risks: Higher oil prices amid Middle East tensions reinforced inflation concerns, strengthened the dollar, and reduced expectations for near-term monetary easing.
Sector and Style Dynamics
- Factor Rotation: Large-cap growth and momentum materially outperformed value, equal-weight equities, and small caps. The equal-weight S&P 500 fell roughly 4.8%.
- Outperforming Sectors: Information Technology (+4.42%) and Communication Services (+4.26%) led, supported by AI, semiconductors, and platform earnings.
- Underperforming Sectors: Financials (-7.28%), Materials (-6.93%), and Real Estate (-6.70%) lagged, reflecting higher yields, weaker cyclical sentiment, and tighter financial conditions.
Europe
European equities declined for the first time in six months. Higher global and domestic bond yields, renewed oil-driven inflation concerns, and expectations for tighter ECB policy outweighed early support from earnings and technology exposure. The decline was broad, with Germany and France underperforming a more resilient UK market.
Europe | EURO STOXX 50 | -2.4% |
Europe | STOXX Europe 600 | -2.5% |
UK | FTSE | -2.0% |
Germany | DAX | -4.0% |
France | CAC 40 | -4.4% |
Primary Market Drivers:
- Rates and Bond Yields: The ECB’s tighter policy stance and a global rise in yields pressured equity valuations, especially rate-sensitive and highly leveraged companies.
- Energy and Geopolitical Risk: Higher oil prices and Middle East tensions raised input-cost and inflation risks, limiting confidence in a faster easing cycle.
- Earnings and Currency Effects: Resilient earnings and AI-related technology demand provided pockets of support, but a weaker euro and broader macro uncertainty kept risk appetite subdued.
Sector Rotation:
- Factor Rotation: Investors favored technology and energy exposure over economically sensitive cyclicals, while quality and defensive stocks offered relative resilience.
- Outperforming Sectors: Oil & Gas (+2.75%) and Technology (+1.96%) were the strongest performing sectors.
- Underperforming Sectors: Autos & Parts (-8.14%), Financial Services (-7.09%), and Basic Resources (-6.67%) lagged most.
Asia
Asian equities were diverged sharply in September. Japan and South Korea remained resilient as AI and semiconductor demand supported technology shares, while China, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, and Australia declined under pressure from higher global yields, a stronger dollar, elevated oil prices, and foreign outflows. The region ultimately combined pockets of tech-led strength with broad weakness in rate- and growth-sensitive markets.
China | CSI 300 | -5.8% |
Hong Kong | HSI | -3.7% |
India | Sensex | -5.8% |
Nifty 50 | -6.1% | |
Japan | Nikkei 225 | +0.7% |
South Korea | KOSPI | +0.3% |
Singapore | STI | -1.4% |
Australia | ASX 200 | -3.2% |
China
- Key Drivers: Targeted policy support and resilient industrial activity provided some stability, but weak domestic consumption, property-sector stress, higher global yields, and a stronger dollar weighed on equities.
- Sector Rotation: Investors favored high-dividend state-owned enterprises, industrials, and select domestic technology stocks, while property developers, consumer companies, and other growth-sensitive names lagged.
Hong Kong
- Key Drivers: Profit-taking after earlier gains, weaker sentiment toward Chinese growth, and caution around earnings pressured the Hang Seng Index.
- Sector Rotation: Insurers, banks, and other defensive financials proved relatively resilient, while internet platforms, hardware, and property developers underperformed.
Japan
- Key Drivers: Strong corporate earnings, AI-related technology demand, a weaker yen, and continued governance-led buybacks supported the Nikkei 225.
- Sector Rotation: Semiconductor suppliers, exporters, megabanks, and value cyclicals led, though select chip names experienced volatility from profit-taking.
South Korea
- Key Drivers: Ongoing demand for AI-related memory chips supported the market, though foreign flows, global yields, and volatility in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix created periodic pressure.
- Sector Rotation: Leadership broadened from semiconductor heavyweights into autos, construction, and other domestic cyclicals as investors reduced concentrated technology exposure.
Singapore
- Key Drivers: Higher global yields, a stronger dollar, elevated oil prices, and profit-taking after earlier gains weighed on the Straits Times Index.
- Sector Rotation: Banks, high-dividend companies, and defensive stocks offered relative support, while REITs, property, and other rate-sensitive sectors lagged.
1.5 Performance Correlation
Throughout September, the 30-day rolling return correlation between Bitcoin and Gold remained relatively stable, ranging between 0.52 to 0.62. Meanwhile, Bitcoin’s correlation with the S&P 500 rose significantly from 0.10 to 0.48, while its correlation with Commodities and REITs varied with no clear linear trend.

3. Outlook
3.1 Projects and Tokens
Bitcoin (BTC)
- Bitcoin recorded its longest period of onchain profitability in 2026 as its Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR) stayed above the 1.0 breakeven level from August 19 to September 14. SOPR measures the aggregate profit or loss realized when holders move coins onchain. Values consistently above 1 indicate participants are selling at a profit, often signaling bullish momentum. This three-week streak indicates most coins moved onchain were transacted at a profit.
- Bitcoin Core 32.0 entered final testing ahead of an October 10 target release. It adds responsive fee estimates, multithreaded block processing, PSBT v2 defaults, and security fixes, boosting node performance without altering consensus rules.
Ethereum (ETH)
- Ethereum scheduled the Glamsterdam upgrade on Sepolia testnet for October 6. Planned changes include protocol-level proposer-builder separation, block-level access lists, and revised gas pricing. Hoodi testnet and mainnet dates remain unset.
- Ethereum's upcoming upgrade will include EIP-8141 (Frame Transactions), enabling users, applications, and sponsors to cover transaction fees using stablecoins and alternative assets. While validators will still receive ETH, the update lowers usability and onboarding barriers for mainstream users.
Solana
- Solana began testing its Alpenglow upgrade on its public testnet, targeting a transaction finality reduction from roughly 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds by replacing TowerBFT with the Votor voting protocol. The potential performance gain could improve exchange, bridge, and merchant use cases, but mainnet timing remains tentative.
Others
- Zcash is targeting November 5 for its NU7 upgrade to reduce block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds and introduce the Network Sustainability Mechanism, targeting October 6 for testnet deployment and October 20 for the final mainnet decision.
- Harmony proposed sunsetting its L1 blockchain and migrating its ONE token to Ethereum. Following an exploit involving forged tokens, the non-binding proposal establishes a final snapshot to issue ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum, subject to validator approval and governance risks.
- Following a Neutron governance exploit, the Cosmos Hub restarted after a prolonged halt after a prolonged halt, transferring approximately 1.23 million ATOM from the attacker’s wallet into a validator-controlled multisignature recovery wallet. Recorded as part of the restart process rather than a wallet-signed transaction, the final disposition of funds remains subject to governance. While the move preserves stolen assets, it raises critical questions regarding validator intervention, chain sovereignty, and transaction finality during crisis response.
