Best crypto to watch for the month ahead

Key Takeaways

  • The Fed held rates on October 28 but markets see greater likelihood of one in December.
  • Bitcoin is on track for a second straight red October, with the US midterms on November 3.
  • Ether ETFs lost $1.2 billion in October as Glamsterdam's next test was postponed.
  • Ripple won final OCC approval for its trust bank
  • HYPE is up about 216% this year.

‘Uptober’ didn't show up again. Bitcoin (BTC) closed September at $83,567 and spent most of October between $80,000 and $85,000. It’s down about 3% for the month and on track for a second losing October in a row.

Ether (ETH), XRP and Solana (SOL) have each dropped by more than 10%. One outlier with a strong year is Hyperliquid's HYPE, still more than three times its price at the start of 2026.

November's record is mixed. Bitcoin's median November return since 2013 is about 8.8%, according to CoinGlass data, but the much-quoted average of about 42% leans heavily on a 449% gain in 2013. Last November, Bitcoin fell nearly 17%.

This year's calendar is busy. The US midterm elections are on November 3. October's jobs and inflation reports follow. Both will shape the Fed's December 9 decision. Solana's Breakpoint conference opens in London on November 15; Bitmine, one of the largest buyers of ETH this year, is expected to stop buying by the end of the month.

1. Bitcoin (BTC)

BTC was trading near $81,200 on October 28, after repeated tests of the low $80,000s. The sharpest came on October 22, when US spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $635.6 million in a single day, their biggest outflow since June.

That pushed BTC toward $81,500, roughly the average price at which the ETFs bought their tokens. Buyers returned within days. The funds took in $110.3 million on October 26 and another $176 million on October 27, trimming October's net outflow.

The Fed held its benchmark rate at 3.75% to 4% on October 28, but the vote was split 10–2, with Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack both wanting a hike.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said inflation "remains elevated" and that the Fed's moves were "starting to work some." At the time of writing, futures priced about an 85% chance of a quarter-point hike on December 9. Before then, October's jobs report and consumer price index will test that view.

The US midterm election is on the mind of many. Prediction markets suggest Democrats may take control of both the House and Senate, which puts the future of the CLARITY Act back in question.

Grayscale argues the result is less important than it may seem, as "a change in control of Congress is unlikely to materially affect the outlook," because "the digital assets industry is bipartisan, global and increasingly institutional."

Roughly the same number of Republicans and Democrats hold or use crypto, Grayscale said. It estimates that only 15% to 20% of global crypto activity happens in the US.

2. Ether (ETH)

October was tougher for ETH. After closing September near $2,705, it fell to around $2,363 by October 28, a drop of about 13%, due to institutional outflows. US spot ether ETFs lost $1.2 billion in October through October 22, their largest monthly outflow of 2026, with withdrawals on all but two trading days.

The funds had taken in about $1.85 billion in August and $832 million in September.

The upgrade calendar slipped too. Glamsterdam, which reworks how Ethereum builds blocks and lets clients process more transactions in parallel, went live on the Sepolia test network on October 6. Its next test, on the Hoodi network on October 26, was called off on October 22 so developers could study how one proposed change, EIP-8037, interacts with existing mainnet contracts. No new date has been set for Hoodi or for the mainnet.

Then there's Bitmine. The company held about 6.04 million ETH, or 4.9% of circulating supply, as of October 23. Chair Tom Lee has said it will stop buying at 5%. At its recent pace of about 12,500 ETH a week, Bitmine is on track to hit that mark in late November. That would take one of ETH's most consistent buyers out of the market just as ETF demand has weakened.

3. XRP

XRP got the outcome it was waiting for in October. But price moves weren’t as responsive.

The XRP Ledger's Batch upgrade went live on October 9. Evernorth, which holds about 473 million XRP, began trading on Nasdaq as XRPN on October 12. Yet XRP slipped from about $1.52 at the end of September to around $1.31 to $1.33, down 28% for the year and about 64% below its $3.65 peak.

The bigger news came this week at Swell, Ripple's annual conference in New York. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted final approval for Ripple National Trust Bank, completing a process that began with conditional approval in December 2025.

The bank will manage reserves for Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin and offer digital asset custody. BNY now supports both XRP and RLUSD on its institutional custody platform and plans to explore tokenized trade finance on the XRP Ledger.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse also addressed talk that the company was moving away from XRP to focus on its stablecoin. "We will never give up on XRP," he said.

US spot XRP ETFs returned to inflows in the week to October 23 after their first red week in three months, keeping cumulative inflows near a record $1.8 billion, according to SoSoValue data.

4. Solana (SOL)

SOL began October near $121 and ended the month's last full week around $102.60, a fall of roughly 15%, even though it delivered the biggest upgrade in its history.

Alpenglow went live on October 21, replacing the network's voting system and cutting the target time for a transaction to become irreversible from about 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds. The switch went through without reported outages; SOL rose about 2.7% on the day, then gave the gain back.

ETF investors have been heading for the exit. US spot Solana ETFs posted a $19.16 million outflow on October 27, their largest daily withdrawal since December 2025, taking October's net outflows to $99.62 million, according to SoSoValue data.

The selling followed 14 straight weeks of inflows that ran into early October. The funds still hold about $1.51 billion in net inflows since launch.

The next date on Solana's calendar is Breakpoint, its flagship annual conference, which runs from November 15 to 17 at Olympia in London. It's the first big stage for developers and institutions to show what they plan to build on a faster network, with Rotor, the next part of the Alpenglow roadmap, still without a release date.

5. Hyperliquid (HYPE)

HYPE has cooled off but still has the best year among the five. The token traded near $80 on October 28, down about 8% over the past 30 days and roughly 18% below its September 23 peak of $98.

But what’s noteworthy is that it’s up about 216% from its close at the end of 2025. That gives it a market value of about $19 billion.

Much of the momentum comes from HIP-3, which lets outside builders list perpetual futures on Hyperliquid for assets beyond crypto. As of October 28, 169 HIP-3 markets held $4.12 billion in open interest, with the S&P 500, gold and WTI crude among the largest contracts.

The protocol also uses trading fees to buy HYPE on the open market, which gives the token steady demand when activity is high.

Spot HYPE ETFs from Bitwise and 21Shares have traded in the US since May and Grayscale's proposed fund is still under SEC review. Supply is the risk to watch. Hyperliquid Labs unlocked 180,000 HYPE, worth about $14.4 million, on October 28, to be distributed to team members on November 6.

That batch is small against HYPE's daily trading, but circulating supply has been climbing, from about 222 million to around 239 million tokens this year.
