What is USD Coin?
USD Coin (USDC) is a fully collateralised US dollar stablecoin powered by Ethereum and jointly created by Circle and Coinbase, which is traded on exchanges at a value of US$1. USDC is the bridge between dollars and trading on cryptocurrency exchanges and is available on DeFi Swap. Users can swap USDC, be USDC Liquidity Providers to earn fees, and boost their yield by up to 20x when staking CRO.
A brief history of USD Coin
USD Coin was launched in September 2018 with two aims: to avoid the volatility of fixed-supply cryptocurrencies and drive fiat currency-to-cryptocurrency conversion. Put simply, USDC’s mission is “digital money for the digital age” — a stablecoin designed for a world where cashless transactions are the norm.
How USD Coin works
USD Coin (USDC) is an open-source, smart contract-based stablecoin pegged to the US dollar on a 1:1 basis. Every unit of this digital currency in circulation is backed up by $1 held in reserve, consisting of a mix of cash and short-term US Treasury bonds. The Centre consortium, which is behind this asset, says USDC is issued by regulated financial institutions.
What is USD Coin used for?
Overall, the goal of USDC is to create an ecosystem where USDC is accepted by as many wallets, exchanges, service providers, and DApps as possible. The technology behind CENTRE consortium makes it possible to exchange value between people, businesses, and financial institutions. It allows businesses to accept payments in digital assets, making it a preferred form of payments for a number of emerging industries, including decentralised finance and gaming. Furthermore, it also provides a safe haven for crypto traders in times of volatility, without the need to pull funds out of crypto completely.
